In our August 2026 technical and AI-visibility audit wave, commercial legal-marketing queries frequently triggered Google AI Overviews while many specialist brands—including agencies competing on those terms—still showed zero sampled LLM mentions across major engines. This article summarizes what we observed with crawl4ai + DataForSEO methodology and what law firm marketing teams should change first. It is field measurement, not a universal census of the entire legal internet.
How we measured
- Stack: crawl4ai site crawls + DataForSEO modules for rankings, backlinks, LLM mentions, and Lighthouse
- Example audit date: 2026-08-04 (Advantage Attorney Marketing’s own property used as a worked example)
- Commercial keyword set: 18 head/mid legal-marketing terms (e.g., law firm seo, attorney marketing, law firm local seo)
- LLM platforms sampled: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini via DataForSEO AI optimization endpoints
- Limitation: SERP features and model answers move weekly; treat figures as a dated snapshot
Finding 1 — AI Overviews are already on the money terms
On the 18-keyword commercial set in our worked example, Google AI Overviews appeared on 11 of 18 queries (~61%). That does not mean every law firm query shows an Overview, but it does mean “we’ll wait until AI settles” is not a strategy for competitive marketing categories.
Finding 2 — Classic rankings and AI mentions can both be zero
The same worked example showed 0 of 18 keywords with a detected organic ranking in the measured depth and 0 target LLM mentions across the four engines sampled. Strong on-page copy alone did not create visibility. Dual-channel work—technical indexation, mid-tail content, entity clarity, and corroboration—has to be deliberate.
Finding 3 — Authority can look “fine” while GEO is empty
Backlink metrics in the same run showed meaningful referring domains and brand anchors from client sites, yet generative mention share stayed at zero. Footer links are not the same as cite-worthy expertise. Original explainers, clean entities, and earned editorial mentions matter more for AI selection than raw link volume against software-suite brands.
Finding 4 — Lab performance is a drag, not the main plot
Mobile Lighthouse checks on key URLs averaged performance scores in the mid-80s with LCP often in the ~3–3.6s lab range, driven heavily by server response. Fix CWV—but do not use performance work as a substitute for content and entity programs.
What law firm teams should do next (90-day bias)
- Lock canonical host, sitemap, and Search Console on the live property.
- Put cite-ready answer blocks and visible FAQs on every money page.
- Ship mid-tail question articles that support each service hub.
- Measure monthly: rankings, AI Overview presence, LLM mentions, organic and AI referrals.
- Earn relevant mentions; stop chasing irrelevant referring-domain vanity.
Methodology note & ethics
Figures above come from Advantage Attorney Marketing’s internal audit tooling and public-site measurements dated August 2026. They are directional for planning, not guarantees of future rankings or citations. We do not sell rankings promises.
